Abstract
The prehistoric culture of the Indigenous peoples of Taiwan in Southeast Asia plays a new role in interpreting the origin and spread of the Austronesian language family. While recent archaeological research in Taiwan has become central to Southeast Asian archaeology, the development of island archaeology has brought to light prehistoric archaeological sites and artifacts found on Taiwan’s islands and coastal regions that have significantly contributed to understanding the origins and spread of Austronesian languages. Given Taiwan’s location as a bridgehead between the continent and the Pacific along the coastal regions of Southeast Asia, it is inappropriate to limit the origin and spread of the Indigenous peoples of Taiwan—who could freely travel by sea at the time—to the distribution and residential patterns of a specific tribe. The recent discovery of the male and female remains of the Liangdao people (Liangdao 1 and 2) in Taiwan’s island regions provides crucial evidence for interpreting the origin and maritime spread of the Austronesian language family. This paper examines the patterns of change in the prehistoric culture of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples and explores their correlation with the maritime dispersal of the Austronesian peoples.
