(Sustainability of biological and cultural diversity, Sbcd)을 측정하고자 하였다.

Abstract

Due to the limited space and resources inherent to islands, the interactions between nature and humans play a critical role in the sustainability of biocultural diversity. This study aims to assess the Sustainability of Biological and Cultural Diversity (Sbcd) as an indirect indicator of biocultural diversity, focusing on the transmission of human cultural practices that utilize biological resources. The analysis is based on data from Shinan County, Jeollanam-do, South Korea, for the years 2007 and 2021, using Land Use Intensity (LUI) and demographic structure variables (proportion of the population aged 65 and older, and proportion of foreign residents). The results indicate that Aphaedo and Jido experienced lower levels of Sbcd due to high development pressures and significant demographic shifts. Although Jido exhibited lower overall growth in terms of Sbcd, its long-term sustainability remained challenged. Conversely, Palgeumdo and Heuksando, which recorded higher Sbcd values, exhibited relatively sustainable patterns of biocultural diversity under lower development pressures. However, the rate of decline in Sbcd on Palgeumdo was more than twice that of Heuksando, indicating spatial variability in the sustainability trajectory. This study provides a quantitative assessment of the sustainability of biocultural diversity based on land use and demographic data, offering foundational insights for sustainable resource management and policy development aimed at maintaining the continuity of human–nature interactions on islands.
