초록

본고에서는 먼저 시계열 데이터와 횡단면 데이터를 통합한 표본을 이용해서 기업의 경제적 성과와 CSR(사회적 책임)성과 사이에 어떠한 통계적인 관련성(인과관계)이 있는가를 패널데이터 분석을 통해 확인한다. 그리고 이 인과성 검증 결과를 토대로 재무성과와 소유구조가 동시에 CSR성과에 어떻게 반영되는지를 함께 검증하였다. 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대체로 인과관계가 경제적 성과(ROA, Tobin-Q)에서 CSR성과 방향으로 존재하였으며 반대방향으로는 많은 선행연구에서와 달리 인과관계가 존재하지 않았다. 둘째 패널자료를 사용한 고정효과와 확률효과를 분석한 결과를 보면 재무성과는 ROA와 Tobin-Q 2가지 모두 CSR성과와 양의 관련성을 나타냈으며, 회계기준 재무성과(ROA)가 시장기준 성과지표(Tobin-Q)보다 기업의 사회적 책임을 설명하는 예측치로서 더욱 유용한 것으로 나타났다. 소유구조는 대주주지분율이 CSR성과와 유의적인 음의 관련성을 나타냈으나 외국인투자자지분은 CSR성과와 양의 관련성을 보였으나 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 샘플기간(6년 연속) 전체에 대한 각 변수의 평균값을 사용한 횡단면 자료와 각 연도에 대한 샘플기업에 대한 자료(pooled data)를 병행 분석한 결과도 대체로 고정효과와 확률효과 분석의 결과와 일치하였다. 셋째 CSR성과의 총점이 아니라 7개 세부 CSR 항목과 재무성과 간의 관련성에서는 Tobin-Q의 경우는 CSR 항목 중에서 오직 유무형의 건전성, 공정성, 경제발전기여도에 양의 영향을 미쳤으며 ROA의 경우는 건전성, 경제발전기여도, 사회봉사기여도 3가지 항목에 의미 있는 영향력을 보여주었다. 다만 환경보호만족에는 ROA와 Tobin-Q가 음의 관련성을 보이거나 유의적인 관련성이 없는 것으로 나타났다.

Abstract

This study examines the causal relationships between financial performance(FP), ownership structure, and corporate social performance (CSP) in Korea. We perform our empirical static and dynamic panel data analyses using CSP scores from the Korea Economic Justice Institute(KEJI). Based on the tests utilizing the panel data accrued during the period of seven years(2003-2009), the following main conclusions could be made from the study. First, we have found the effect of financial performance on CSP scores, but could not find the influence of CSP scores on financial performance(Tobin-q, ROA). Second, the static and dynamic models using the panel data provide only limited evidence of a significant impact of financial performance on CSP scores, and ROA(return on asset) are more useful than Tobin-q as a proxy for financial performance measure. Third, ownership structure(major share) have a negative impact on CSP score, but foreign ownership have a positive and insignificant impact on CSP score. Fourth, in cross-sectional estimation using pooled data and means of variable through the sample periods, financial performance is positively associated with CSP scores. Fifth, there is a positive and significant association from financial performance to certain CSP categories such as fairness, soundness, contribution to society and contribution to economy, especially financial performance has negative impact on CSP categories such as environmental protection. Finally, the additional analysis indicates that differences exist in the relations among financial performance, ownership structure and CSP grouped by industry classification. These results partially support the theory that corporate social performance and slack resource are positively related. Also, these findings, while subject to the limitations inherent in the use of specific CSP measures, provide mixed support for the business case for CSP.
