Abstract

This study conducted a path analysis to examine the effects of mother’s warmth/control parenting behaviors in early childhood on the child's GRIT(perseverance of effort, consistency of interest) in the fourth grade of elementary school by mediating the child's self-esteem in the second grade of elementary school. The results of the study are as follows: First, maternal warmth influenced the child's perseverance of efforts by fully mediating the child's self-esteem, and maternal control directly affected the child's perseverance of effort. Second, maternal warmth partially mediated the child's self- esteem, affecting the child's consistency of interest, and the maternal control did not significantly affect the child's consistency of interest. This study has been discovered that mother's warmth and control parenting behaviors have different mechanisms that affect the child's GRIT. It is expected that the results of this study will contribute to providing practical implications for the role of parents in improving children's GRIT.
