Abstract
In this study, using data from 1st to 3rd years of KCYPS 2018, we investigated how the longitudinal relationship between grit (interest and effort) and self-esteem and how positive parenting attitudes predict the relationship. We also examined whether there are differences in the relationship by school level. Path coefficients were estimated after partitioning intra-individual (within-students) and inter-individual (between students) differences in latent variables using the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM). As a result, first, for both interest and effort models, random intercept model was found to be a better model, confirming the need to separate within- and between-students latent characteristics. Second, controlling for between-students difference, the higher the level of the variables at the previous time point, the higher the level of the variables at the later time point, meaning there was a statistically significant auto-regressive effect. Third, at the elementary school level, there was a unidirectional cross-lagged effect of self-esteem on effort. Besides the unidirectional cross-lagged effect of self-esteem on effort, there was a reciprocal effect of self-esteem and interest at the middle school level. Fourth, the effect of the parenting attitude on grit and self-esteem was found to be significant overall and at each time point. Lastly, as for the difference according to the school level, the auto-regressive effect of self-esteem and interest was larger at the middle school level, and the cross-lagged effect of interest on self-esteem was significant only at the middle school level, and the predictive power of parenting attitude on grit and self-esteem was relatively larger at the elementary school level.
