Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the symbolic play level and the frequency and duration of toddler’s play participation according to the types of joint attention(JA) during play interaction between toddler and mother. The subjects of this study were 50 pairs of 24~35-month-old toddlers and their mothers living in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon. Using The Observer XT 13, the frequency and duration of toddler’s symbolic play levels and their participation in play were coded and calculated. The results of this study were as follows; first, the frequency and duration rates were higher in the JA episodes than in non-JA episodes, especially when the joint attention was initiated by toddlers. Second, the level of symbolic play and play participation of toddlers were higher in the JA episodes. On the other hand, in case of non-JA episodes, especially when initiated by mothers, the frequency rates of toddler's non-play behaviors and non-symbolic play behaviors were high, and toddler's non-participation and passive participation were also high. This research provided the basic information about JA, toddler’s symbolic play level, and play involvement in the toddler-mother play interaction, and also provided the contextual information of JA in which toddler’s play level and involvement are promoted.
