‘숨은 손가락’에 내포된 가해자 의식 연구 - 소설 <숨은 손가락>과 <모든 영광은>에 나타난 화해의 방식

이청준의 소설은 ‘나’ 자신과의 화해와 ‘나’와 ‘타인’과의 화해 그리고‘나’와 ‘사회’와의 화해가 중심을 이루며 화해의 대상이 점진적으로 변모하는 양상을 보인다. 이와 같은 변화와 성장은 6·25전쟁이나 분단 그리고이산을 주제로 기술했던 ‘통일을 향한’ 소설들에서도 다르지 않다. 마찬가지로 전쟁의 상흔에 따른 진정한 화해라는 주제는 황순원 소설의 본영이기도 하다. 따라서 본고는 동일한 전쟁 상황에서 행해진 ‘손가락질’을소재로 하고 있는 이청준의 <숨은 손가락>(1985)과 황순원의 <모든 영광은>(1958)이라는 두 작품에서 나타나는 화해의 방식을 비교·고찰해 보고자했다. 두 작품은 ‘숨은 손가락이 내모는 죽음’이라는 엇비슷한 소재를 격자구조로 형상화하고 있다. 더불어 화해를 위해서는 ‘가해자 의식’이 전제되어야 한다는 사실을 동일 조건으로 제시하는 것까지도 다르지 않으나작품의 결말은 상이하다. 이청준의 세계가 비극적이라면 황순원이 구축한세계는 다소 낭만적인데, 거기에는 ‘고백할 수 있는 용기’의 여부가 필연적으로 차이를 만들어 낸다. 부연하자면, 이청준의 소설에서는 화해의단초만을 마련할 뿐 진정한 화해에는 이르지 않으나, <모든 영광은>에서는화해의 진정성을 엿볼 수 있다. 그 결과 우리에게는 아직 현재진행형인분단의 극복과 통일을 향한 작가적 고민의 실체를 눈여겨봄으로써 진정한화해에 이르는 길을 모색할 수 있을 것이다
Abstract
Re Cheong-jun's novels are showed gradual changes that the themes is reconciliation of ‘me and me’, ‘me and others’ and ‘me and society’. These sorts of changes and growth are no different in literature of unification. The themes of unification literature is the Korean War, division and dispersed families. In common with Re Cheong-jun's novels, the themes of genuine reconciliation is the essence of Hwang Sun-Won's novels. Therefore, this study compare ‘Hidden Finger(1985)’ to ‘All the Glories is(1958)’. Those works include ‘Point a Finger at Others’ in the Korean War. Those works describes the death in ‘Hidden Finger’. The ‘Hidden Finger’ was clandestine. In addition, those works shows reconciliation should be built on (the foundation of) a consciousness of wrongdoing. But, the ending of the work was different. The themes of Ri Cheong-Jun's novel seem tragic, but Hwang Sun-Won's novel is romantic. There, the courage to confess is necessarily making a difference. In other words, there is an attempt of reconciliation but it does not reach a real reconciliation in ‘Hidden Finger’. In Hwang Sun-Won's novel, the authenticity of reconciliation can be confirmed. We need to pay attention to the overcoming of the division that is still in progress and the substance of the writers anxieties toward unification. As a result, we will be able to find a way to real reconciliation from those woes.
