본고는 건전이라는 단어가 번역되어 조선에서 사용되기 시작한 근대 시기를 기점으로 건강을 의미하던 건전이 어떤 의미확장을 거쳐 담론으로 나아갔는지 추적하였다. 그 방법으로 건전 담론을 양상별로 살펴보고 어떻게 문화사에서 추동했는지 파악하는 것에 그 목적을 두었다. 그 결과 초기 ‘건전’은 조선 지식인들에 의해 계몽담론과 결합하여 자주독립국가 건설을 위한 도구로 사용되었다. 일본은 건전을 정치적으로 변용하고 확장하면서 대동아공영을 실현하기 위한 도구로 사용하였으며 그 결과 조선 지식인들의 건전 담론은 변질되었으며 추후 통제담론과 결합하여 권장과 통제라는 양면성을 가지게 되었다. 그 결과 건전이 어떻게 사회적 담론을 주도하고 바꿀 수 있는지 확인하였다.
Abstract
This paper traces how the term ‘soundness’, originally meaning health, underwent semantic expansion and evolved into discourse, beginning with its translation and adoption in Joseon during the modern period. Its purpose is to examine the various aspects of wholesomeness discourse and understand how wholesomeness functioned as a driving force in cultural history. The results show that early ‘wholesomeness’ was combined with enlightenment discourse by Joseon intellectuals and used as a tool for building an independent nation. Japan politically transformed and expanded ‘wholesomeness’ as a tool to realize the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. As a result, the wholesomeness discourse of Joseon intellectuals became distorted and later merged with controlling discourse, acquiring the dual nature of wholesomeness as both encouragement and control. This demonstrated how soundness can lead and transform social discourse.
