이 논문은 베트남 전쟁에서 주월한국군이 수행한 대부모 군사작전의 특징과 의의를 도출한다. 특히 1967년 오작교 작전과 홍길동작전을 분석하여, 한국군의 대부대 군사작전이 미군의 탐색격멸 작전과달리 잔적 소탕과 지역 확보에 중점을 둔 소탕 작전이었음을 밝힌다. 이와 동시에 한국군은 미 관찰단의 평가와 같이 소규모 제대의 수색, 정찰, 매복 등 소부대 작전을 통해 대부대 군사작전에서도 성과를 거둘 수 있었다. 한국식 소탕작전으로 부를 수 있는 이러한 한국군의 독특한 대부대 군사작전은 베트남 전쟁의 전략 목표인 평정에 기여함과 동시 에, 최소한의 피해로 최대의 성과를 달성하려는 한국군 내부 목표를 충 족시키며 한국군의 전쟁 수행 과정에서 중요한 전략적 의미를 지닌다.
Abstract
This article aims to identify the characteristics and significance of the large-scale military operations conducted by the Republic of Korea Forces in Vietnam. By focusing on the 1967 Oh Jac Kyo and Hong Gil-dong operations, this article reveals that the large-scale operations of the ROK forces were clearing operations, not U.S.-style search and destroy missions. As U.S. observers highly praised, the ROK forces achieved notable success in these operations, largely due to small-unit tactics such as reconnaissance and ambushes. This unique approach holds significant meaning in the ROK's conduct of the war, as it not only contributed to the strategic goal of pacification in the Vietnam War but also fulfilled the ROK forces' internal goal of achieving maximum results with minimal casualties.
