Abstract
The purpose of this study is to give strategic implications and directions by analyzing global major IPTV operators’open platform strategies. For this purpose, it discusses the platform-related theories, especially the conceptual approach about ‘opening platforms’ initiated by Eisenmann, Parker and Van Alstyne in 2008. The platform-mediated networks encompass several distinct types of participants, such as end users, complements, platform providers facilitating end users, access to complements, and platform sponsors developing platform technologies. Each of these roles can be opened, that is, can be structured to encourage participation. Based on the theoretical background, this paper reviews factors that motivate decisions to open platforms. At the platform provider and sponsor levels, horizontal strategic decisions entail interoperating with established rival platforms, licensing additional platform providers, or broadening sponsorship. With respect to complements, vertical strategic decisions to open a platform involve backward compatibility with prior platform generations, securing exclusive rights to certain complements, or complements envelopment. Several cases in IT industry are exampled. Lastly, it is concluded by analyzing global major IPTV platforms that over time the recent market saturation tends to push IPTV toward opening platforms by shared responsibility for serving complements and end users. Its strategic implications are completing the N-Screen strategy, expanding the economies of scope, saving the R&D cost, diversifying the contents, and meeting competition with potential entrants and established rivals.
