Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand the types of misinformation and the practices of major actors against misinformation during the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Content analyses of 154 misinformation of South Korea and 155 misinformation of the United States from January to September 2020 were conducted. The study revealed that the volume of misinformation regarding the crisis outbreak declined through the timeline. However misinformation regarding the management increased during social turbulence. Also, more than a half volume of misinformation contained accusations. Especially China/ Chinese were blamed in misinformation of management phase in Korea, while they were blamed in those of the outbreak phase in the US. Regarding the source of the misinformation, majority of COVID-19 related misinformation did not contain any authorities. In Korea, more misinformation impersonated existing experts, while in the US, more misinformation tended to fabricate claims by anonymous sources. This study also analyzed efforts of major actors-government/health authorities, internet platforms/journalism media- to debunk COVID-19 related disinformation. The findings illustrates that effective approach to stop disinformation requires a fast evaluation of the fact and a systematic cooperation among the actors. Finally this study presents some implications for practices.
