Abstract

This study demonstrated using data from the 2010 & 2018 Korean Women Manager Panel whether there is a gender wage gap in managers in the Korean labor market, and the determinants of it. We apply a counterfactual decomposition approach using quantile regression to the wage distribution of managerial workforce in Korea. We found that female managers receive a wage of about 5.2-6.6% less than male managers. It has been shown that the explained gap in the individual’s productivity gap did not generate or mitigated the wage gap; whereas, the unexplained discrimination by the individual productivity gap caused or was deepening the wage gap. The results suggest that invisible discrimination still exists in the Korean labor market to a considerable extent, and that institutional mechanisms should be continuously developed to in a way that improves such discrimination.
