Abstract

Pungmulgut, which used to be a part of people’s life-world, is being neglected by or departing from reality as it is specialized by successors. To overcome the succession system that sticks to past traditions, Pungmulgut must be newly conceived according to the life-world of modern people. The grounds for modernization are to be found in traditions of Pungmulgut handed down as work, play, exorcism, season, and rite culture. This study first shows within the religious system that Pungmulgut is the core of Korean exorcism culture instead of Mudanggut and captures the festive character of the town community exorcism carried out as Pungmulgut. The modernization methods of Pungmulgut were divided into work, play, exorcism, season, and rite according to urbanization and industrialization of the society. It was an intent to seek recreation of traditional Pungmulgut to be appropriate for the modern industrial society. More important is a developmental modernization of Pungmulgut as a total art instead of separate modernization. To achieve such modernization, creative imagination that overcomes limitations of Pungmulgut succession should be exhibited by strengthening the capacity embracing popular culture and performing arts. In addition to recreating Pungmulgut according to modern life-world, the task is to make a new Pungmulgut tradition of the present era that brings innovation to modern culture through creativity.
