Abstract
The purposes of the current study were to determine the prevalence of self-reported hamstring injuries and to find the associated factors with the hamstring injuries among the high school female students who specialize in Korean focal dance. The participants of the study were 418 students who were recruited from the all art high schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The questionnaire developed by Askling was translated into the Korean version by forward and backward method. The Korean version of questionnaire was used to assess the prevalence of the self-reported hamstring injuries. The face to face interviews were conducted by one trained personnel. The differences of self-reported hamstring injury rate between explanatory variables were analyzed by chi square test. There were differences in factors associated with injury occurrence between injury types. In addition, the current findings suggested a lack of proper first aid and medical test and treatment available to the korean focal dancers following hamstring injuries. The results indicate that stretching activities should be carried out with more caution, particularly as part of the ‘warm-up’ before and stretching after the classes. In conclusion, it was suggested that stretching activities and muscle fatigue be two major contributing factors to the incidence of the hamstring injuries.
