Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of self-reported hamstring injuries and their associated factors in student-dancers of Korean art high schools. This study is performed in order to provide the basic data for the efficient diagnosis and treatment of hamstring injuries, and to develop the method which can reduce the incidence of them. This study is cross-sectional questionnaire survey on hamstring injuries and associated factors in student-dancers. There are seven art high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, and 747 student dancers of the schools (94.1% of total students) participated. The independent variables of this study were dance background, physical activity status, injury experience in the thigh. The history of acute and/or overuse injuries was investigated as dependent variables. Doing thigh stretching after class might be associated with a lower rates of acute hamstring injuries than not doing it (p=0.053). Subjects who had no experience of exercise before dancing may be associated with a higher rates of overuse hamstring injuries than those who had (p=0.007). Subjects who were doing any exercise other than dancing may have 1.6 times higher rate of overuse hamstring injuries than those who was not doing any exercise (p=0.020). The findings of the present study confirm that thigh stretching exercises after class could reduce the incidence of acute hamstring injuries and suggest that the student dancers who did other exercises before dancing and/or are still doing exercises other than dance may be at higher risk of overuse hamstring injuries than those who did not and/or are not.
