Abstract
It is natural for Koreans to accept Western Christianity introduced by missionaries in the late 19th century from the perspective of their own pre-understandings. Gil Sunju and Yi Yongdo are typical Korean Christian leaders who read Bible in the view of Korean traditional religious spiritualities. Gil belonged to presbyterian and Yi to methodist. Gil was influenced from traditional Sun tradition while Yi from shamanism. I examine two leading Christian's preunderstanding in terms of identity and difference by comparing their spiritual origin and development in their own sermons and writings.. Unlike Gil Yi had been excommunicated by his denomination until 1994. According to my judgement, the reason why Korean Church leaders misunderstand of his theological thought lies in their fallacy of category mentioned by Ken Wilber. Wilber divided human consciousness into three, pre-differentiation, differentiation and trans-differentiation. When he says fallacy of category, it means the confusion of pre and trans-differentiation. Seeing from Wilber's fallacy of category, Korean early church leaders obviously committed great mistaken on condemning Yi. This paper is useful today because the same mistaken continues in present Korean Church to distinguish pre-ego from trans-ego.
