바하이신앙의 관점에서 바라본 선민의식과 다문화주의

본 논문은 바하이신앙의 관점에서 선민의식과 다문화주의를 의례, 신념체계, 공동체의 차원에서 검토한다. 바하이신앙은 19일 축제에 대한 개방적인 운영과 바하이신앙을 알리는 영화제작상영을 통하여 인류를 향한 보편적 가치를 세계의 곳곳에서전달한다. 성직자제도의 부재로 인하여 자유로운 경전해석과 영적 성장을 위한 개인의 행위가 보장되고, 의례에서 특별한 예식이 존재하지 않는다. 다문화주의의 기초로서 내적 성품과 비폭력적 포교방식을 강조하고, 이란혁명 이후에 이란에서 진행된바하이공동체에 대한 조직적인 박해와 탄압의 경험은 종교적 소수자로서 순응과 탈출의 대응방식으로 나타났다. 한국바하이와의 면접조사를 통하여, 협의의 선민의식은 아니어도 광의의 선민의식으로 해석될 여지가 있는 점진적 계시가 진리의 상대성과 진화성을 토대로 기존의세계종교들과 공존과 차이를 동시에 설명하고 있다. 800년 주기로 새로운 진리가 도래한다는 주장은 하느님의 반복되는 인류에 대한 극적인 사랑과 인간의 영적인 진보에 기초한다. 다양한 문화를 존중하는 국제회합과 바하이간의 국제결혼사례에서 바하이공동체의 다문화주의를 확인할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper deals with the consciousness of chosen people and multiculturalism in the dimensions of belief, ritual, and community of Bahai Faith. The 19th festival of Bahai faith is open to anybody and Bahai films play an important role of transmitting Bahai universal values to the world. The objection to clergy system helps Bahais to freely interpret their scriptures and to develop internal virtues of individual behaviors. In Bahai ritual, there are no particular formal rituals like other world religions. As the foundations of multiculturalism, internal virtues and peaceful missions have been emphasized. After Iranian revolution, the systematic persecution and oppression against Bahai community led Bahais to respond in two different ways: obedience and escape. In the interview with Korean Bahais, we find the consciousness of chosen people in a wide sense, not in a narrow one. The doctrine of progressive revelation, which is based on the relativity and evolution of truth, explains the coexistence and differences of existing world religions. Bahai worldview that a new religion appears every 800 years presupposes the repeated God’s dramatic love for humanity and spiritual development of humanity. Bahai international gatherings embrace various cultures and Bahais marry internationally, which are good examples of Bahai multicuturalism.
