Abstract
The Baekbeokyo incident in 1930s colonial Korea was not merely a case of religious deviation or criminal violence. Rather, it serves as a symbolic case that reveals how media discourse, colonial authority, and knowledge-power mechanisms worked together to define and exclude a particular religion as a “Evil Religion(邪敎)”. This study analyzes the discursive frameworks found in colonial newspaper reports and popular films to illuminate the cultural-political process through which Baekbeokyo was labeled and marginalized as heretical. Within binary oppositions such as orthodoxy vs. heresy and enlightenment vs. ignorance, Baekbeokyo came to embody moral, social, and sexual corruption, while its leader Jeon Yong-hae was portrayed as a figure of madness, violence, and sexual perversion. The colonial press sensationalized the incident through graphic imagery and narratives of violence or ignorant fanaticism, thereby stimulating public affect. Subsequent films visually reinforced these narrative structures, institutionalizing fear and hatred toward deviant religions. This paper argues that the repeated representation of Baekbeokyo played a foundational role in shaping the modern Korean discourse on “Pseudo-Religion”, and examines how sexual politics, colonial enlightenment ideology, and media power intersected in this process.
