Abstract
Theodore Hughes’s Literature and Film in Cold War South Korea describes how South Korea during the Cold War defined its discursive boundaries through a textual analysis of literary and filmic works from the 1920s through the 1970s. The identity politics of modern Korea, according to the author, is inextricably related to the ways in which Korea others and identifies with the temporal and spatial others of the Japanese empire, North Korea, and the US. Therefore, this book also covers the colonial period and the period immediately after the liberation (1945-48), despite its focus on Korean nationalism during the cold war era. The author, with his reading of a wide range of cultural texts, depicts the negotiations among ideologemes that constitutively and consistently recur throughout the political changes associated with Japanese colonization, the Korean War, national division, revolutions, and developmental dictatorship in modern Korean history. While pursuing a cultural history of modern Korea, the author focuses on verbal-visual relationships in cultural texts. While dislocations, elisions, or examples of semiotic slippage in representation of historical reality by verbal text are interpreted as visuality’s interruption of the verbal, reality’s complexity and ambiguity as represented in visual text are interpreted as the immediate embodiment of the verbal order. In this reflexive-mutual configuration of the verbal and the visual, culture is defined as a mere re-presentation of the indefinite complexity of reality. Cultural text, therefore, is rendered secondary to its foundation and is unable to present singularity. This hermeneutics is what I call theoretical objectivism, which sees the objectivity of a certain historical situation’s indefinite complexity from a transparent medium of culture. This can result in political nihilism in the sense that it performatively bans text from real politics. To avoid this unintended result, it is necessary to restore the historicity of cultural studies by locating cultural text outside of history, not within history. This is also necessary when one attempts to undertake Korean studies not as a marginalized field of regional studies but as a universalist science.
