Abstract

Cities, especially Asian cities, look like spaces of affect. Anger, fear, joy, sadness, love and hate are circulated, distributed and accumulated over time and space, while generating multiple events here and there. The sort of affective space is examined based on and mediated by the experiences of participating several events including No Limit:Tokyo Autonomous Zone, where anarchist-minded youngsters from different Asian cities gathered in September 2016. First, a close attention is paid to the concept and theory of affect, suggested as pre-personal or pre-cultural intensities by Brian Massumi et al. Neither uncritical following nor unconditional dismissing the theory, the self-reflection on the shortcomings of the cultural studies which has been focused at narrative, discourse and signification is performed. Then, the non-representational theory championed by Nigel Thrift et al, is under examination, focusing at the bodily action of ‘spacing’ and the place as practice and event. In the theory, the contemporary capitalism is conceptualized as overlapping affective-aesthetic fields, and counter-practices as the modulation of the fields. All these suggest that ‘Asia’ (or any other geospatially bounded region) should be thought as multiple and hybrid spaces based on the ontological experiences of the actors beyond the abstract idea of Asia as the space for intellectual thinking or method.
