Abstract

The secular decline in the proportion of females currently married is the most important factor that reduced the total number of births in Korea from 2000 to 2017. The shrinkage of the female population at child-bearing ages also contributed to the fall in the number of the newly-born. On the other hand, the increase in the marital fertility rates during the period slowed down the decline in the number of birth by countervailing the effects of the aforementioned two factors. However, the marital fertility rates rapidly dropped in recent years, accounting for 60% of the decline in the number of births between 2015 and 2017. It is likely that the number of births in Korea will decline more rapidly than predicted by the lower-bound official projection. Suppose that the proportion of females currently married continue to fall for another 10 years according to the pace observed during the last decade, and that the marital fertility rates in the next 5 years follow the trends of the last 5 years. Under the hypothetical scenario, the number of total births will fall below 300,000 in 2020 (284,000), will drop under 200,000 in 2026 (197,000), and will have declined to 135,000 by 2042. This result suggests that the socioeconomic impacts of population changes could be more pronounced than previously anticipated.
