Abstract
A book that contains critical discussions on the camp in modern East Asian society, which has recently shown remarkable academic achievement, is Detention, Isolation, Deprivation:Beings Exiled to the Inside of the World, Stories of Internment and Refugees in East Asia. This book explores the camps, places that have been internment, and relationships that have been created and operated from the imperial-colonial system to the Cold War-division system to the current post-Cold War-neoliberal system, through the Asia-Pacific War and the Korean War. Through this, it examines the experiences and relationships of ‘refugees’ as displaced beings along with criticism of sovereign power. Ultimately, this book aims to go beyond the abolition of physical camps and to the abolition of the sensed and imagined camps that reside within the human mind in the relationships that have been internment. That is, through the study of the camps and refugees in modern East Asian society, we seek to overcome the ‘fear’ of detention, isolation, and deprivation experienced by each person, and to find the ‘power of connection’ that does not turn away from the detention, isolation, and deprivation of another being. Through the discussion in this book, we will be able to understand the operating principles of the camps, places that have been created, transformed, and reproduced in East Asian society in the process of regime and social structural change. In addition, through critical awareness of this, we will be able to explore the possibility of the border crossing that can escape from the state of isolation and deprivation.
