Abstract

This article labels the civilian government’s governance approach—which treated the pain left by the May 18th incident as an object of governance for the “creation of a new Korea” within the compensation culture formed in the 1990s—as the “cultural politics of pain,” and attempts a critical intervention against it. To this end, the paper focuses on the role and function of frames as the core driver of this cultural politics of pain. It recognizes that the complexity of the May 18th pain, which does not align with existing understandings, lies outside these frames, and proposes the need for new frames capable of identifying it. From this perspective, Lee Soon-won’s “Face” (1990), Jeong Chan’s “Song of Sorrow” (1995), and Jang Sun-woo’s film A Petal (1996) were examined. These works, created and released in the 1990s when compensation was achieved through the fetishization of wounds, question the suitability of frames that identify the pain of May 18th. They reveal how the pain of May 18th breaks through and resets the boundaries of the inexpressibility, unshareability, and uninterruptability of suffering, precisely because of the essence of the frame, or its inherent vulnerability. Created and released during the 1990s when compensation occurred through the fetishization of wounds, these works question the adequacy of the frame that identifies the pain of May 18th, (Chapter 2) and seek ways for the present to connect with that pain by countering the frame that regulates our response to it. (Chapter 3) Examining the limitations and possibilities arising here, this paper emphasizes the significance of translational thinking that engages with the world. It does so by feeling sorrow ‘for’ the suffering bodies ‘there and then’ without easily appropriating them as our own, and by following the ‘demand’ that survives within the loss of the original. This holds significance in that it opens an interpretive space where we can think differently about the inexpressibility, unshareability, and uninterruptability of suffering, grounded in a reconfiguration of our knowledge and attitude toward the suffering of the Other.
