Abstract

Firm productivity exhibits significant regional variations, with the greater Seoul area having more productive firms, on average. To understand the factors behind this regional disparity, we apply the methodology of Combes, Duranton, Gobillon, Puga, and Roux (2012) to compare the differences in firm productivity distribution between the greater Seoul and other regions. Specifically, we decompose the productivity gap into three components: (1) the average difference across all firms, (2) differences in the exit rates of the least competitive firms, and (3) the dilation effect resulting from larger differences among the most productive firms. Our results highlight the particular importance of the dilation effect in understanding productivity differences between the greater Seoul and other regions. We suggest that positive assortative matching between high-productive firms and high-skilled labor, together with the adoption of new technologies, merit further investigation as potensial sources of the dilation effect in Korea.
