Abstract

Over the past decade, the rate of employment growth in the manufacturing industry has been consistently slowdown. This study focuses on the increase in unit labor costs and examines the patterns of job creation at the plant level. We find that the increase in unit labor cost at the plant reduces employment growth rate. Results imply that unit labor cost fluctuations account for approximately 10.2% of the recent decrease in employment. We analyze unit labor costs by dividing them into labor costs and labor productivity to examine the wage effect and productivity effect. The overall employment growth rate increase when labor productivity increase under constant other conditions. On the other hand, an increase in labor costs reduce the employment growth rate of regular workers and increase the employment growth rate of temporary workers. This suggests that an increase in wage costs may reduce the regular employment and replace it with temporary employment. This effect is greater as the larger the plant and the lower the capital equipment rate. In the case of the ICT manufacturing sector, the effect of replacing regular workers with temporary workers is greater than that of the non-ICT manufacturing sector. The results imply that the recent slowdown in employment in the Korean may be related to wage increases that exceed productivity. Furthermore, it suggests that growth of productivity is essential to create high-quality job.
