초록
This study was to investigate the anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activities of Gynura procumbens for applications of medicine and food additives. The 50% ethanolic extract was fractionated with a series of solvents in order of increasing polarity. Microorganism used for experiments was three gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis), Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), and two gram-negative bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), and the yeast , Plasmodium ovale (P. ovale). The bioassay applied for determining the anti-bacterial effects of G. procumbens leaf extract and fractions included the disc diffusion assay. The results shown that among the five fractions, n-hexane and chloroformfractions showed the highest antimicrobial activities against S. aureus, E. coli, P. acnes, B. subtilis and P. ovale. Also, to confirm anti-inflammatory activity of solvent fractions, we treated the solvent fractions on Raw 264.7 cell with LPS. The result showed that chloroform fraction at 25 ug/ml concentration inhibited Nitric Oxide(NO) production. These results demonstrate that G. procumbens leaf extract and fractions showed inhibition of bacterial and inflammatory activities and could be useful as potential source of bioactive compounds.
