Abstract
Rachel Carson's Silent Spring is recognized as a classic of environmental history and an example of popular scientific writing. This paper analyzes the rhetoric of the book by the methods of the canons of the classical rhetoric, the technical proofs of Aristotle, Bitzer's rhetorical situation and the method of metaphorical analysis to see why the book was so successful. According to the analysis, the book suggests the harmfulness of pesticides and massive aviation controls by them, which was not noted at the time, on the basis of concrete scientific evidence in various aspects. In particular, it shows that it is possible to increase persuasion by effectively recognizing that it was the situation to take action as well as arousing readers' emotions by using metaphors and fluent literary expressions. It is prominent that employing throughout the book conceptual metaphors [Mankind is at war with nature] and [Mankind is traveling] is urging people to change attitudes and make prudent decisions. Thus this book, is a material appropriate for the teaching of rhetoric as a successful example of the popularization of science by taking attention to its characteristics.
