초록
Taking an anecdote by the ancient Chinese philosopher and rhetorician Zhuangzi as a rhetorical cue, this essay explores comparative methodology, the objects of comparative rhetoric, and the consequences of such study. Drawing on the art of recontextualization as a comparative methodology and using the rhetoric of the dao as an example, it challenges the binary interpretive framework and proposes developing different terms of engagement to interrogate our own “useless lumber” and to embrace new ways of thinking and being for useful uselessness and for rhetorical engagements through a comparative lens.
Abstract
Taking an anecdote by the ancient Chinese philosopher and rhetorician Zhuangzi as a rhetorical cue, this essay explores comparative methodology, the objects of comparative rhetoric, and the consequences of such study. Drawing on the art of recontextualization as a comparative methodology and using the rhetoric of the dao as an example, it challenges the binary interpretive framework and proposes developing different terms of engagement to interrogate our own “useless lumber” and to embrace new ways of thinking and being for useful uselessness and for rhetorical engagements through a comparative lens.
