초록
This study aims to investigate the potential fusion of metaphor's rhetorical function, particularly as a topos, with cognitive elements. This will be achieved through an comprehensive synthesis of cognitive science theories and cognitive metaphors. Traditionally, metaphor was construed as an imitation or transfer between entities stemming from an objective reality. However, in the twentieth century, this perspective underwent a transformation by establishing a link between metaphor and human cognition. Although conceptual metaphors derive subjectivity from individual bodily experiences, their universality is derived from the shared human body structures and sensory mechanisms. These cognitive metaphors ingeniously bridge tangible bodily encounters with abstract concepts. Serving as both rhetorical commonalities and inventive constituents, they empower rhetors to refine their discourse and evoke empathy among the audience. In the era of artificial intelligence, the convergence of metaphor and cognitive science will hold more remarkable potential for rhetoric’s advancement.
