Abstract
This study aims to analyze the rhetoric of Zen poetry in Hanshan shi ji(寒山詩集), focusing particularly on the rhetorical meaning and function of argumentative poetic expressions that lead to self-reflection. In the works of Hanshan, argumentative expressions such as “我見,” “我聞,” “常聞,” and “世有” appear, embodying his spiritual pursuit. These expressions primarily serve to caution against a life tainted by secular desires and to guide individuals toward realizing their inherent nature and the essence of all things. This suggests that Hanshan’s poems are not merely intended to evoke emotional resonance in the reader but also to encourage self-reflection on one's life and the adoption of a disciplined, meditative attitude. In particular, his implementation of rhetorical techniques and his poetic style, which develops a discussion with readers through such expressions, is distinct from that of his contemporaries, who emphasized emotion. Moreover, his use of common language(白話), which allows readers to easily comprehend the poems without relying on annotations, indicates that he considered the breadth of his readers and their active participation in reflective discourse. The fact that these argumentative expressions perform a rhetorical function that overcomes the dualistic perspective caused by the use of everyday language and enables us to understand the nature of all things has significant implications today. As modern society continues to struggle with conflicts between self and others, as well as imbalances between material and spiritual concerns, such reflections become increasingly relevant. Therefore, it is hoped that these explorations of Zen rhetoric, which cultivate introspection and practical transformation, will continue to inspire future generations.
