In this paper, the writer surveyed the concept of the topic sentence thoroughly in terms of its historical origin and cognitive-psychological significance, for very few studies had so far been made of its historical origin and its cognitive-psychological wight, though the topic sentence had often been dealt with in the language teaching profession, especially in writing.
