The purpose of this study is to identify the discourse topic both through a close comparison of some scholars' views on the identity of the discourse topic, and through the presentation of valid grounds, both theoretical and empirical, for what the discourse topic should be, and for how the discourse topic is to be derived on the part of the listener and reader.
