발레 관객 이해를 위한 대안적 접근과 개념틀 고찰 : ‘서사적 접근’과 ‘댄스 리터러시’

Abstract

Research on ballet audiences has traditionally been conducted through demographic, socio-psychological, and behavioral approaches. While these approaches are valuable for efficiently identifying the characteristics of large audience groups and providing useful data to promote the performing arts market, they often focus on partial or specific aspects of the ballet audience experience, limiting a comprehensive understanding of audience experiences. To address these limitations, this study proposes the "narrative approach" and "dance literacy" as complementary alternatives to existing methods. The narrative approach aims to provide a holistic understand audience experiences by contextualizing them within personal lives and cultural narratives. Meanwhile, dance literacy offers a conceptual framework for comprehensively interpreting the multi-layered and complex experiences of ballet audiences. These efforts shift the perspective from viewing ballet audiences as mere consumers of performances or homogeneous crowds to recognizing them as active, individual agents who experience ballet appreciation and enjoyment in uniquely personal ways, enriching their lives through these interactions. This study underscores the necessity for ballet audience research to move beyond practical objectives, such as market development, and to pivot toward a deeper exploration of the audience itself.
