초록

Dictionaries often overlook the nuances of near-synonyms, while corpora can provide in-depth information not included in a dictionary. It implies that utilizing corpora is required to get a clear understanding of near-synonyms. This study is intended to explore comprehensively the similarities and differences in meanings and usages between the two synonymously used verbs, find and seek, with diverse analysis tools. To achieve this goal, this study 1) investigates the stylistic and diachronic variation of two verbs through analyzing BNC and COHA; 2) retrieves the dictionary definitions of them via two online available dictionaries and applies them to the sentences extracted from BNC; 3) extracts noun collocates of them from BNC and analyzes them with Rayson’s(2005) Wmatrix program to sort their semantic categories; 4) surveys Korean college students regarding the recognition of them. The findings revealed that there were clear differences in meanings and usages of the two near-synonyms. And this study suggested that the teaching and learning of lexicon with the semantic categories extracted from Wmatrix program were required as an alternative method.
