Abstract
Compassion has been newly spotlighted as a significant factor in coping with the suffering in contemporary society. Compassion meditation, in particular, has been increasingly studied and used to improve psychological and mental health. To understand the mechanism of compassion meditation from the Korean Seon Buddhist perspective, eleven people participated in a new compassion meditation program (HSM) in Sangdo Meditation Center. Participants were interviewed on their internal experience during the practice, and the results were analysed through CQR. The internal experience was categorized into four domains: Motivation of Practice, Specific Experience during HSM, Change after HSM, and Understanding of HSM Experience. These categories were again divided into 22 sub-categories. The core experiences of HSM include: energy circulation, relaxed and warm body, elevated sensitivity to physical changes, a sense of connection with the universe and other beings, a sense of peace and wholeness through accepting oneself, a feeling of happiness and gratitude, and realization of the truth and oneself. Results showed the psychotherapeutic effects of HSM as follows: an increased sense of understanding and accepting, strengthened emotional stability, physical changes, changes in attitude, and improvement of social relation. This study will provide an insight on the meanings of compassion in modern society and suggest a developed foundation from the Korean Seon Buddhist perspective. Further, it will show that HSM promotes physical and psychological well-being, enhancing relationships with oneself and others.
