초록

This study explores the features of the posthuman interface represented in Octavia E. Butler’s “Amnesty.” Butler critically depicts the society in which people are suffering from a radical change with the invasion of the alien race, Community. By assuming the alien race as a metaphor of artificial intelligence, this paper foregrounds their characteristics in light of the cybernetics mechanism. Particularly, their method of social organization is similar to the computer-based communication mode. Through the process of coexistence with mankind, the Communities’ efforts including the linguistic invention construct alien-oriented interface. While people try to find their way out of this crisis, given the power dynamics, they are coerced into submission. It indicates an inevitable conflict toward the emergence of the existence that outperforms human intelligence as science continues to develop. Butler alerts that to constitute a proper social interaction within the posthuman society, it is necessary to reconsider the value of symbiosis by diverting the anthropocentric views.

Abstract

This study explores the features of the posthuman interface represented in Octavia E.
