초록
This study investigates the various senses of the English preposition on using the Functional Pivot Approach by E. Kim (2022), which integrates structural and functional elements. The analysis begins with the structural configuration of ‘X on Y’, establishing the ‘contact’ pivot cluster. Functional elements reflecting the interactive relationship between X and Y (Evans & Tyler 2004) lead to the identification of the ‘task performance’ and ‘gravity’ pivot clusters. Additionally, the observer’s visual cognition of the X/Y configuration contributes to the ‘visual interaction’ pivot cluster. This study classifies the senses of on into four main pivot clusters: ‘contact’, ‘task performance’, ‘gravity’, and ‘visual interaction’, and presents a semantic network for on. It addresses the limitations of previous research that relied too heavily on the ‘contact’ sense, which often conflicted with native intuitions or failed to account for relevant constraints. By incorporating functional elements, this study offers a more intuitive explanation of the various senses of on, including the observed constraints.
