초록
The purpose of this study is to discuss how the senses of the English preposition in are semantically related in its semantic network. The Functional Pivot Approach is proposed in this study as a solution for the examples that are difficult to explain in the Functional Approach (Evans & Tyler 2004). Considering the teleological functions of the container, it establishes four functional pivot senses. Containers can be classified according to their purposes of use: a box (which contains things) and a room (where activities take place). Specifically, the box serves two functions: i) storing and ii) packaging, while the room serves two functions: iii) defining an area and iv) providing an environment. The study discusses how these functional pivots contribute to resolving the challenges raised by prior studies.
