Abstract

Korea has been a largely monolingual society that uses Korean as its official language at least since the liberation from Japanese colonization, and the exclusive use of Korean has been regarded as a tacitly agreed formula of Korean theatre. In recent years, however, the form of ‘multilingual play’ has emerged that uses more than two languages in a single work. Such tendency to use multiple languages is being found in young playwrights’ scripts and draws a renewed attention to the language issue of theatre. Translating mutlilingual plays by playwrights form multiethnic/multilingual countries for Korean stage also has been providing tough challenge with theatre practitioners. In the summer of 2017, the National Theater Company of Korea staged five plays by contemporary playwrights of Korean ancestry actively working in the English-speaking world in the 2000s under the title of ‘Korean Diaspora Season.’ As many of these works deal with Korean diaspora identity by delicately using varied proficiency in Korean and English, the language has emerged as an important issue. In this paper, I discuss the aesthetics of multilingual play with a focus on Julia Cho’s Aubergine, which was evaluated as the most successful production among those five produced in the ‘Korean Diaspora Season.’ I first examine the ways in which languages have been used in the history of Asian American theatre, and demonstrate the fact that the form of multilingual play has emerged only recently in the Asian American theatre as well. Then I analyze the multilingual strategies adopted in Aubergine and highlight its diasporic aesthetics. This study after all illuminates that the multilingual play is a prominent feature of contemporary Asian American theatre representing diasporic experiences and sentiments that have been more and more prevalent under globalization. With this study, I would like to introduce diasporic aesthetics of multilingual theatre, as well as a historical context that Korean theatre practitioners can refer to when considering producing multilingual plays.
