Abstract

This paper aimed to explore dramaturgical methodology with regard to how to compose the medial relationship in multimedia performance. The recent developments in digital technology have radically changed communication methods in everyday life as well as in the performing arts. In this respect, this paper considered why some multimedia theatre has achieved successful communication, while others have not. It also noted that some multimedia works have experimented with communication methods without drama text, and incurred omissions in the various possible routes of communication. In this situation, this paper considered that it is necessary to explore how to perform the interactivity of medial communication. With the consideration mentioned above, this paper intended to find a practical methodology through a theoretical analysis with some actual examples. In order to do this, Katie Mitchell’s multimedia performance was examined first through some interviews and with a critical review focusing on the dramaturgical methodology. This confirmed that the dramaturgical strategy in multimedia theatre is to weave a figurative pattern to activate the interactivity between the media rather than the hierarchical structure. When the multimedia theatre was based on the drama text, it was necessary to divide the text according to medial attributes such as visual, audial, or perceptive sense. Then, this paper noted intermediality as a performative mode and an aesthetic mode, created by productive interactivity among the media. To reconstruct the possibility of intermediality, a theatrical scene was composed. It suggested that intermediality could be made creatively and artificially by interactivity between the media and the spectator’s perception. Then, the intermedial situation was explored and the intermedial factors were searched. ‘Convergence’, “energy’, ‘complementary connotation’, and ‘affective dynamics’ were found to be constitutive factors that perform or induce intermediality.
