본 연구는 간결한 일상어와 미니멀리즘 구조로 생의 어려움과 불가해함을제시하는 노르웨이의 극작가 욘 포세(Jon Fosse)의 희곡에서 과거의 기억을 극화하는 방식을 분석한 것이다. 포세는 과거와 현재를 중첩시키거나 등장인물들을 과거의 자신과 조우하게 만드는 방식을 빈번히 사용하는데, 이는 과거를통해 존재의 문제를 바라보려는 시도로 읽을 수 있다. 그의 신작들이 유럽 무대에서 공연되었을 때 베케트(Samuel Beckett), 핀터(Harold Pinter)의 뒤를 잇는 작가라는 평이 나올 정도로 포세의 희곡은 앞선 두작가의 작품과 주제의식, 언어표현 등에서 유사성을 갖는다. 특히 ‘일상과 환영’, ‘단순함과 모호함’이 뒤섞인 극의 분위기는 핀터와 포세가 공유하는 세계라고 할 수 있다. 핀터와의 비교를 통해 포세 희곡의 본질을 밝히는 데 목적을 둔 본 연구에서는 먼저 핀터의 ‘기억극’ 중에서 인물들의 사적 영역을 독백의 방식으로 극을 대상으로 핀터가 제시하는 기억의 의미를 살펴본다. 그리고 기억을 극화하는 포세의 방식을 탐색하기 위해 과거를 재생하여현재와 교차시키는 작품들 중 남녀 간 단절을 다룬 <어느 여름날(A summer's day)>과 가족의 죽음을 기억의 중심에 둔 <죽음의 변주(Death variations)>, 그와달리 과거의 기억 속으로 인물들이 회귀하는 독특한 방식의 희곡 <따뜻함(Warm)>을 분석하여 핀터와 구별되는 포세의 특성을 밝혀보고자 한다. 베케트와 핀터의 연관성은 ‘부조리성’이라는 개념으로 파악되고 있다. 따라서 핀터와의 유사성을 전제로 포세의 극작 방식에 접근해 본 이 연구의 결과는베케트 이후 존재의 문제를 다룬 현대 희곡의 변화 양상을 조망하는 근거가 될수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the dramatization method of memory in the plays of Jon Fosse, a Norwegian playwright who presented difficulties and mysteries of life with simple everyday language as well as minimalistic structure. Fosse frequently uses the approach of overlaying the past with the present or having characters meet themselves from the past, which can be interpreted as attempts to look at existential problems through the past. Fosse's plays have similarities with both Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter in their works, themes, and linguistic expressions to the extent that critics reviewed Fosse as the successor of Beckett and Pinter when Fosse's new works were performed on stage in Europe. In particular, the atmosphere of the plays, with a mix of 'routine and illusion' and 'simplicity and ambiguity', can be the world that Pinter and Fosse have in common. Aiming to determine the nature of Fosse's plays through a comparison with Pinter, this study first examines the meaning of memory Pinter presents focusing on Landscape, which dramatized the characters' private domains in the form of monologue among Pinter’s 'memory plays'. In addition, to explore Fosse's approach of dramatizing memory, this study seeks to determine Fosse's characteristics differentiated from Pinter by analyzing A Summer's Day on the disconnection between men and women, Death Variations, which placed the death of a family member at the center of memory, among the works in which the past is replayed and intersects with the present, and Warm, a unique form of play in which characters regress into memories of the past. The similarities between Beckett and Pinter are understood as the concept of 'absurdity'. Therefore, the results of this study, which examined Fosse's dramatization approach based on the similarity with Pinter, are expected to provide a basis to take a look at the change pattern in modern plays which deal with existential problems in the future.
