Abstract

“Brother and sister who become the Sun and the Moon” is a Korean narrative that is well-known as an old story and a modern traditional folktale. Inseop Jung’s “The Sun and the Moon” and Jintae Sohn’s “The Sun, Moon, and Star” are modern narratives that share the same content as “Brother and sister who become the Sun and the Moon.” This paper examines Inseop Jung’s “The Sun and the Moon” and Jintae Sohn’s “The Sun, Moon, and Star.” During the modern period, “Brother and sister who become the Sun and the Moon” was published in various print media in both Korean and Japanese. Inseop Jung and Jintae Sohn’s texts share the commonality of being written in Japanese by Korean authors. Inseop Jung’s “The Sun and the Moon” was written in 1911, making it the earliest source based on its date of writing. This text has the granting of the title ‘brother(male)-sun/sister(female)-moon’ and then the replacement of the title ‘sister-sun/brother-moon.’ This triggers a discussion about the mythology that explains the origins of the sun and moon. However, the expression that she shows ‘feminine modesty’ by being ashamed of her sister who has become the sun reveals a feudal perception of women that remains in modern narratives. In addition, Jung's text actively utilizes the ‘Law of Repetition’ in the development of events. The tiger’s recognition of her actions as evil and her ‘lying’ to God out of fear of God’s punishment is the only scene that is not found in other sources. “Sun, Moon, and Star” by Jintae Shon is a text written in 1923. The text is characterized by its documentary nature. In this text, the subjects of the incident are not the ‘brother and sister’ but the ‘three sisters.’ This shows a variation of the story of “Brother and sister who become the Sun and the Moon” in the modern era. In Sohn’s text, the mother asks the tiger to eat her children instead of her to save her life. The children ‘lie’ to the tiger that is tracking them, showing the intersection of the children’s wisdom and the tiger’s foolishness. However, it is disappointing that Sohn’s text lacks paragraphs for the replacement of title, and that the law of repetition is not fully utilized in the scene where the tiger attacks the mother.
