Abstract

Background Contemporary jewelry has evolved into a comprehensive art form that integrates material properties with formative elements to express the designer’s sensibility and creativity. Among them, textile jewelry, characterized by the flexible structure and tactile quality of fibers, offers unique formative potential distinct from metal-based jewelry. This study explores "transparency" as a formative concept by examining how the interplay of light, material, and structure generates perceptual effects and expressive potentials in textile jewelry. Methods Experiments were conducted by combining light-responsive transparent materials with loosely knitted textile structures to explore the expression of transparency from both material and structural perspectives. In particular, resin was used to fix the looped knit forms and enhance dimensionality, while observing the visual effects created by light reflection and transmission. Through theoretical investigation, transparency was redefined not merely as a physical property but as a formative concept that integrates sensory experience and structural expression, and this framework was applied to the creative process. Result The interaction between knitted structures and transparent materials revealed delicate optical effects, including transmission, reflection, and refraction of light. Furthermore, contrasts such as softness versus rigidity and flexibility versus coldness contributed to expanding the expressive potential of textile jewelry design. Conclusion This study interprets transparency as a formative language that integrates sensory and structural elements. Through creative experimentation, it proposes a new direction for expressing and structuring sensory experience in textile jewelry, thereby suggesting new possibilities for the aesthetic expansion of jewelry design.
