Abstract

The purpose of this study is to classify and analyze the texture contrast of modern knitwear. Knitwear can be used to display two or more texture, can easily be mixed with other materials, and can be used to emphasize tactile texture by adding decoration technique and finishing treatment. Thus knitwear , as a type of visual art, showing various texture contrast effect by two or more different visualized textures, has become more popular in a sensitive period of the 21st century. In order to study texture contrast of modern knitwear, 966 pieces were selected from 55 ready-to-wear collections from New York, London, Milano and Paris. Texture contrast of modern knitwear were divided in five categories by flexibility(limp/firm), softness(soft/hard), transparency(transparent/opaque), sheen(glossy/matte) and surface(flat/rough) contrasts. Five results for texture contrast of knitwears were derived by this study. First, texture contrast in knitwear were significantly higher in basic yarn than in decorative yarn for all categories of texture contrasts. Second, texture contrast were significantly higher in basic knitting structure than in varied knitting structure for all categories of texture contrasts. Third, flexibility contrast and sheen contrast were significantly high when mixing with other materials. Fourth, sheen contrast and surface contrast were significantly high when utilizing decoration technique. Fifth, texture contrast were significantly higher in solid colored than in multi colored knitwear.
