Abstract

The present role of religion seems to be one of sustaining existing cultural realms, rather than bring about fundamental changes. the great changes in Ho Nam cultural realms associated with the diffusion of presbyterian Church in U. S. This paper attempts to explain the diffusion process of presbyterian Church in U. S. in Ho Nam province in 1894~1940 for the purpose of understanding character of presbyterian Church in U. S. The diffusion process of presbyterian Church in Ho Nam Province divide into 3 stages. First, fix stage Which had taken root during 1894~1904, established 5 mission station. in this stage, presbyterian Church diffuse from a port into a open field of western according to a watergate of Mankyeong river, Yeongsan river. so presbyterian Church distributes a plain of western, a port of watergate. Second, expansion stage, Which secured a strongpoint of mission as like Chunju where it was a symbol of administrative, cultural center that gave birth to the Chosen Dynasty, and spread over all region during 1905~1923. the major principles of diffusion during expansion stage are the neighborhood effect, the hierarchical effect, accumulation effect. Third, stagnation stage, which delayed or stopped in the region during 1924~1940 thanks to the financial straits and the pressure, suppression about Church by Japan Government after 3ㆍ1 independence movement. so church members went into a decline and so sluggish as to changing, Church diffused into some islands of south and west, among the mountains of eastern but rarely ever spread.
