이 글은 고양읍교회(高陽邑敎會) 설립과 그 초기 성격을 파악하는 데 주요한 목적이 있다. 1897년 설립된 이 교회는 남감리회(Methodist Episcopal Church, South)의 첫 번째 조직교회인 역사적 상징성을 띠고 있다. 그러나 그동안 한국기독교 역사 속에서 고양읍교회가 그리 비중 있게 다뤄진 적은 없었다. 단순히 ‘남감리회의 첫 번째 조직교회’로 언급되는 경향이 짙을 뿐이었다. 그것은 역사적, 신학적, 선교학적, 지역적 차원의 이유로 비롯된 바가 크다. 이를 염두에 두고 본 연구는 고양읍교회에 대해 다음과 같은 부분을 중점적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 첫째, 고양지역에 남감리회가 진출하기까지의 과정이다. 이것은 전달자가 누구이고, 어떻게 들어가게 되었는지를 확인하는 부분이다. 두 번째, 고양읍교회 설립 및 초기 활동에 관한 그 구성원을 살펴보도록 할 것이다. 이는 수용자를 파악하는 과정이라 할 수 있겠다. 세 번째는 고양읍교회와 교인들의 신앙양태 및 활동 등을 파악할 것이다. 이것은 전달자와 수용자가 만나 형성된 이 신앙공동체의 일반적 성격을 정리하는 과정이다. 이러한 과정을 거쳐 본 연구에서는 다음과 같은 사항들을 확인할 수 있다. 먼저 초기 한국기독교 역사의 한 흐름, 즉 남감리회의 뿌리를 살펴보는 작업이다. 이 점에 있어 본 연구는 한국교회사 및 한국감리교회사의 내용과 그 구성을 보완하는데 도움이 될 수 있다. 또한 본 연구는 한국기독교 역사 연구에서 도외시되기 쉬운 일반 ‘민중’의 활동과 성격을 단편적이나마 밝히고자 시도했다. 그간 한국기독교의 역사는 일면 엘리트 또는 지식계층 중심으로 치우쳐 서술된 경향이 있었음을 부정할 수 없다. 따라서 본 연구는 이른바 민중, 다시 말해 서민들이라 할 수 있는 토착교인들에 대해 좀 더 주목하며, 자료가 허용하는 범위 내에서 가능한 한 밝혀보려 했다. 이같은 연구과정과 작업이 앞으로도 한층 활성화된다면 한국기독교의 초기 역사는 더욱 입체적으로 복원될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to understand the establishment of the Goyang Methodist Church and its early character. Founded in 1897, the church bears the historical symbolism of the first organized church of Methodist Episcopal Church, South. However, the church in Goyang-eup(city) has not been treated with much importance in Korean Christianity history. It was more likely to be referred to simply as the first organized church of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in Korea. There are many historical, theological, missiological, and regional reasons. With this in mind, this study focuses on the following points of Goyang Methodist Church. The first is the process until the Methodist Episcopal Church, South enters Goyang. This is to confirm who the messenger is and how he came in. Second, lets look at the founding members of the Goyang Methodist Church and its initial activities. In other words, this is the process of identifying the recipient. Third, we should understand the religious patterns and activities of Goyang Methodist Church and believers. This is the process of organizing the general characteristics of the religious community formed by the meeting of messengers and recipients. Through these processes, the following can be confirmed in this study. First of all, it is to ecplore the roots of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, a trend in the early history of Korean Christianity. This study will help supplement the contents and composition of Korean Church history and Korean Methodist Church history. In addition, this study tried to clarify the activities and characteristics of Minjung, who is easily ignored in Korean Christian historical research. It is undeniable that the history of Korean Christianity has been described mainly by the elite. Therefore, this study focuses more on the so-called Minjung natives and tries to clarify them as much as possible within the permissible limits of the data. If this research process and work are further activated in the future, the early history of Korean Christianity will be restored in multiple dimensions.
