미국 북장로회 선교사 권세열(Francis Kinsler, 1904-1992)은 성경구락부 운동의 지도자, 평양에서 숭실전문과 장로회신학교의 교수, 서울에서 장로회신학대학교의 교수로 42년간 활동하며 한국교회와 사회에 크게 공헌했다. 권세열은 만주와 몽골 선교의 비전을 가지고 한국에 들어왔으나 1932년 만주사변 이후 성경과 신학교육에 전념했고, 빈민 아이들을 교육하기 위한 성경구락부 운동을 전개했다. 권세열은 해방 이후 총회신학교 창립에 참여했다. 한국전쟁 시기에 그는 미군을 위한 통역자와 설교자로 활동했고, 미군과 기독교세계봉사회의 지원을 받아 전재민과 이북 출신 목사 가족을 위해 구호활동을 했다. 그는 예장총회 군목부장과 한국군목연합회 위원장을 역임하면서 한국의 군목의 위상을 높이는 일을 했다. 권세열은 한국전쟁 직후 신학교육을 위해 로마서 주석과 요한복음 주석을 저술했고, 한국 목사 1,000여 명을 교육했다. 그는 지도자 양성에 민감해서 신학교의 젊은 교수들과 목사들에게 유학할 수 있도록 지원했다. 1954년을 기점으로 한국장로교회 안에 에큐메니칼 논쟁이 일어났을 때, 권세열은 개혁주의 목사로서 에큐메니칼 신학을 지지했다. 그리고 1956-1964년의 시기 동안 에큐메니칼 선교관점에서 선교 사역의 현지 이양을 지지하고 도왔다. 그가 선교사로서 성공할 수 있었던 조건들이 있었다. 그가 한국에 왔을 때 이미 10명의 가족들이 한국 선교에 참여하고 있었다. 그리고 한경직․윤하영․옥호열 등의 프린스턴 신학교의 동문들의 연대가 있었다. 성경구락부를 통해 그는 전국적으로 인적 네트워크가 있었다. 그의 완벽한 한국어 실력은 미군과 한국교회 사이에 다리를 놓았다.
Abstract
Francis Kinsler(1904-1992), a missionary of the Nothern Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A, served as a leader of the Bible Club movement, a professor at Soongsil College and the Presbyterian Seminary in Pyongyang, and a professor at Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Seoul for 42 years, greatly contributing to the Korean church and society. Kinsler came to Korea with a vision of missions to Manchuria and Mongolia, but after the Manchurian Incident in 1932, he devoted himself to Bible and theological education in Korea and launched the Bible Club movement to educate poor children in a Christian way. After the liberation, he participated in the founding of the General Assembly Seminary. During the Korean War, he worked as an interpreter and preacher for the US military, and with the support of the US military and the Church World Service, he did relief work for the victims of war and the families of pastors from North Korea. He served as the head of the chaplaincy department of the Presbyterian Church and the chairman of the Korea Chaplain Federation, raising the status of the Korean chaplain. Kinsler wrote commentaries on Romans and the Gospel of John for theological education right after the Korean War, and trained over 1,000 pastors. He was also sensitive to training leaders by opening the way for young seminary teachers and pastors to study abroad. In 1954, when the ecumenical controversy arose within the Presbyterian Church in Korea, he supported ecumenical theology as a Reformed minister. And during the period 1956-1964 he supported and assisted in the local transfer of missionary work from an ecumenical mission perspective. There were some conditions that made him successful as a missionary. When he came to Korea, there were already 10 family members participating in the Korean mission field. As there was a sense of solidarity among alumni of Princeton Seminary such as Kyung-chik Han, Ha-young Yun, and Harold Voelkel. Through the Bible Club, he had a national network. His perfect Korean proficiency built a bridge between the US military and the Korean church.
