로스역 한글성경의 보급과 현재 소장본에 대한 연구

두 부분으로 구성된 이 논문은 1) 로스역 한글성경의 보급에 대하여 탐구하고, 2) 현재 소장된 판본들에 대하여 심층적으로 조사하는 것을 목표로 한다. 보급 측면에서는, 현재까지 확인되지 않았거나 덜 알려졌던 보급자들에 대하여 탐구하고 보급 시기에 대하여 상세한 이해를 시도하며, 보급량에 대하여 이전의 연구보다 한 걸음 더 나아간 추산을 시도한다. 이 연구에 따르면, 6부류의 전도자와 권서들이 만주와 한반도의 다양한 지역에서 1880년대 초부터 1900년경에 이르기까지 보급활동을 전개하였으며 보급량은 두 가지 방식을 통하여 67,000권에서 77,040권으로 추산된다. 소장본의 측면에서는, 현재 국내와 해외에 최소한 총 12종의 로스역 한글성경이 소장되어 있음이 확인되었고, 그 판본들의 종류 및 소장처가 소개되었다. 판본들에 관하여 기존에 잘못 서술된 정보의 수정이 제안되었으며, 이전 연구에서 출판이 추정되었으나 소장본과 영인본이 확인되지 않던 『예수셩교셩셔말코복음』(1884, 후반기) 판본이 국내에 소장되어 있음이 확인되었다. 로스역 한글성경은 다양한 형태로 기증되어 소장되어 왔는데, 영국성서공회, 스코틀랜드성서공회, 그리고 미국성서공회에서 대한성서공회에 이 성경의 일부 판본들을 기증하였다. 국내에서는, 김양선이 한국기독교박물관에 기증한 로스역 한글성경들이 백홍준이 남긴 유산으로 판명되었다. 백낙준은 자신의 소장본을 연세대학교 도서관에 기증하였다. 한편, 대한성서공회 소장본 『예수셩교누가복음젼셔』(1882)와 연세대학교 소장본 『예수셩교젼셔』(1887)는 2016년 12월 15일자로 국가등록문화재로 지정되었다. 이 분야의 연구는 권서들에 대한 한국 측 자료의 발굴, 여성권서에 대한 연구, 그리고 새로운 로스역 단편 성경의 발굴 또는 관련 문헌의 추가적 확보 등을 통하여 한층 더 발전할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
This article has two goals: 1) to study the distribution of Ross’s Korean New Testament and 2) to investigate various editions of the New Testament currently in the collection. In terms of distribution, it tries to explore the distributors who have not been identified or were less known until now, to attempt a detailed understanding of the distribution period, and to make a more accurate estimate of the amount of distribution. According to this study, six types of evangelists and colporteurs operated the distribution from the early 1880s to around 1900 either in Manchuria or the Korean Peninsula and the amount of distribution was estimated from 67,000 to 77,040 by two types of methods. In terms of the editions in the collection, the article identifies at least twelve editions of Ross’s translation that have been kept in Korea and abroad, and introduces the details of the editions and the places where they are being preserved now. It also corrects the errors in the information on some editions. Furthermore, it shows that the Gospel of Mark (the second half of 1884), which was claimed to be published in the second half of 1884 without the original or facsimile copy, was indeed published and has been extant in Korea. Editions of Ross’s Korean New Testament have been gifted and kept in various ways. The British and Foreign Bible Society, the National Bible Society of Scotland, and the American Bible Society gifted several editions to the Korean Bible Society. Several editions of the New Testament that Kim Yang-Sun gifted to the the Korean Christian Museum at Soongsil University are identified as the legacy of Baek Hong-Jun, one of the first evangelists in Korea. Baek Nak Jun gifted his collection of the editions to the library of Yonsei University. The Gospel of Luke (1882) preserved by the Korean Bible Society and The New Testament (1887) preserved by Yonsei University were designated as National Register of Cultural Heritage as of December 15, 2016. Research in this area is expected to develop further by discovering Korean data on colporteurs, studying women colporteurs, and finding new editions of Ross’s translation or obtaining the related literature
