Abstract

After coming to Korea with other six missionaries in 1892, Reynolds first stayed in Seoul, generally planning mission works of the Southern Presbyterian Church(PCUS) in Honam area. He examined local situations and searched for where stations could be established in mission trip for all around Chulla-do in 1894, and purchased sites in Chunju and Mokpo that would be used for station bases in the future. Meanwhile, he focused on Sung Poo Chai mission works for a few years in Seoul while planning for mission works in Honam: he opened his residence near Seodaemun as a church for weekly gathering. In spring of 1897, Reynolds decided to move to Chunju, accepting suggestions of missionaries in Chunju including Tate after he visited the city, and moved to Chunju with his family members in June of the same year to begin mission works in Chunju Church. His Chunju Church started to grow in earnest in around 1900; he baptized ten people in that spring, and Chunju Church had average 50 devotees just before he left due to his sabbatical year in June 1900. Reynolds, who had stayed in Seoul since 1902 because of translation of the Bible, accepted his post in the Church again in February 1908. He made a ministry department to organize Korean devotees and took the lead in the growth of the Church with his passionate, fluent preaching, revival meetings, and Bible studying. Reynolds, who had lived in Jeonju since 1908, conducted mission works in Chullabuk-do, taking charge of churches around Chunju as well as Chunju Church. He was in charge of the east party of Kimje-gun, Kuemgu, Kobu, and Heungdeok. In 1909, Reynolds toured and took care of the fifteen Christian communities. As a believer of “Nevius Method,” he applied self-support method to local churches. He daringly used the principle, and the churches reacted carefully; they began to take up a collection too much for them. As a result, the churches in charge of Reynolds became self-support ones within Chunju station. It was the fact that Reynolds conducted mission works in two churches belonged to Seoul station of Northern Presbyterian Church(PCUSA)-Seungdong Church and Yeondong Church-that should be noticeable during his Seoul living that began in 1902 again because of translation of the Bible. He first worked as the minister in Seungdong Church for three years since 1903 because of the earnest request of the mission committee of Seoul station of Northern Presbyterian Church. Every Sunday he taught learning class between noon and one o'clock and then preached at afternoon gatherings of three churches (Saemunan, Seungdong, and Yeondong) by turns to guide Wednesday prayer meetings. Between March 1906 and August 1907, he took charge of Yeondong Church in place of Gale, the missionary of Northern Presbyterian Church. Reynolds continued his mission works even when he lived in Pyeongyang: he guided chapel and English worship in a theological school on Sundays and took charge of Wasan and Kocheng Church around Pyeongyang.
