Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the effects of a game-based block coding program using Micro:bit and retro arcade game coding kits on the creative problem-solving ability, computational thinking, and learning engagement of sixth-grade gifted students in information science. The program was conducted over 10 sessions with 20 gifted students, and its effectiveness was measured through pre- and post-tests. In addition, qualitative data such as open-ended surveys, class observations, and analysis of student artifacts were collected to examine learners’ experiences in depth. The analysis revealed statistically significant improvements in all three variables, with a particularly notable increase in computational thinking. Students experienced processes such as generating creative ideas, devising problem-solving strategies, and engaging in iterative debugging, which enhanced their self-directed learning and engagement. The qualitative analysis also reported high levels of interest and a strong sense of achievement among students. These results suggest that a game development-based block coding program can serve as an effective instructional strategy to simultaneously enhance both cognitive skills and emotional engagement in gifted students in information science.
